When children turn 16, they go through a serum-induced psychological aptitude test which tells them where they belong. Beatrice was born into Abnegation, which runs the government. After her test results show equal attributes of multiple factions making her a Divergent, her proctor records her result as Abnegation and warns her to never reveal her test results to anyone as its dangerous.
