It is based on the book India's Bandit Queen: The True Story of Phoolan Devi by the Indian author Mala Sen. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, the movie features Seema Biswas in the lead role. The movie opens in 1968 at a small village in Uttar Pradesh and focuses on the life of Phoolan Devi. She is married to a young man called Puttilal despite child marriage being prohibited during the period. Though Phoolan's mother Moola tries to object to the match, no one pays any attention to her.
